Researching & Planning (U7: P4, M3, D1) (U16: P3, P4, M1)
P4 (U7): Research and plan content for an original article.
For my news article I need to ensure that I adhere to the client brief by creating an article that appeals to a target audience of 16-25 year olds, whilst also keeping it relevant to current affairs that they will be interested in.
In terms of genre, my article will be a serious reportage feature article, focused on education and mental health.
The article I have decided to write is the best approach to teenage life. I feel like it's not spoken about enough in the media, especially from the point of view of teens themselves. This will meet the client brief because all young people in the UK from ages of 16-25 go through exams and heavy work loads, whether that be GCSEs, A-levels of university dissertations.
In my article I will be planning to interview two students who have dealt with exams and managing their work loads in very different ways, both with different outcomes. This will give listeners a greater insight into the pressures that students face to do well in school and the best ways to manage this. For example, the importance of having active hobbies such as football, running or swimming. In order to make it more entertaining I will also make sure to keep it honest throughout, discussing the unrealistic goals that schools will use to promote themselves to prospective parents.
For the older part of my target audience I will research into the transitions students have from structured education, to independent study and then going into the real world of work, whilst also maintaining personal health and fitness. As part of my primary research I will carry out a survey.
News values:
Impact: The impact of my article will have on the target audience is that they will gain a wider understanding of how all teenagers go through the exact same struggles and events despite the lack of discussion around the issues. Similarly, they will gain a wider understanding on the overall benefits of keeping fit at a young age so that they can reap the rewards of this in older age. This will appeal to 16-25 year olds as at this age fitness and self-image generally becomes important. For teens, daily exercise may help prevent conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, and abnormal cholesterol levels, as well as poor lifestyle habits that lead to heart attack and stroke later in life. Exercise on a regular basis is part of a healthy lifestyle, but some teenagers can exercise too much.
Timelines: I chose to write about this topic because it is relevant in this day and age due to heavy use of social media for teenagers that can affect self-esteem. In result of this teenagers can end up over compensating by exercising too much in order to measure up to the idea of the perfect body that social media has presented.
Prominence: Many people will have the same experiences throughout their teenage life, as the people who are being interviewed. This will comfort listeners and engage them in the article making them want to read on. Allowing the audiences to identify with the issues spoken about will create a safe space for them to come together and discuss the subject.
Bizarreness: Many people may not really know the underlying effects that body image has on teenagers - both boys and girls. This will give a clearer understanding about how teenagers should feel. Similarly, for the older end of my target audience this will give them a greater understanding of teenagers nowadays and the issues surrounding social media.
Conflict: My news article doesn't contain much conflict. However, it may contain some foul language in order to fully convey the contents of the article. Even though this isn't conflict, it is going on all around the world that everyone experiences at some point.
Currency: People will tend to read the article when researching into teen-age development and the best ways to get teenagers into fitness. As fitness is important at any age this article will be inclusive to all audiences wanting to gain an understanding into health and fitness and how starting young can benefit you in older age.
Proximity: In my article I will discuss simple and easy ways to keep fit at home, this is inclusive to everyone as majority of people like to stay healthy in order to avoid any underlying health problems - it relates to everyone anywhere around the world.
Primary Research Questions:
I will be conducting an online survey, questioning 40 people in total. I will achieve this by leaving the survey open for half a day and inviting contributions.
The questions will be:
Interview Questions:
For the interviews, the a level students will be put together in a discussion via video call debating the differences between their lifestyles - the questions provided will act as a prompt to help the debate flow ( this will be partly scripted however, participants will be allowed to elaborate on their points) . In addition to this, I will include a short monologue at the beginning of the podcast introducing the ideas behind the topics we have chosen to discuss.
1. How much exercise do you do during the week?
2. Do you find that your mood is lowered when you do not participate in exercise during a day?
3. What do you consider the most important component of a healthy lifestyle?
4. How do you structure a typical revision day?
A) for a weekend during exams
B) for a day during holidays
5.
Interviewees:

P3 (U16): Develop ideas for sound elements for identified media purpose.

As shown above, here are some of the sound elements I will be using during my podcast. To introduce the show I will create a jingle. The jingle will be up -beat and made up of motivating music that people often listen to at the gym or whilst doing exercise. Keeping the podcast upbeat will encourage listeners to stay and listen to the important issues without making it depressing and hard to talk about. I will also use the same jingle to close the podcast at the end. The foley sounds of someone exercising all relate to the story and will add to the atmosphere of the podcast. The purpose of the foley sounds is to motivate listeners to go out and do some exercise. The voice over will be the people being interviewed and the host. I will have a range of ages - someone who is 16 and currently doing GCSEs, someone going through their second year of a - levels and someone who chose not to continue with school after GCSEs showing the wide range of opinions students have on school and its pressures/ effects on students.
Asset list:

M3 (U7): Reference and record information sourced for use within the article.
primary and secondary research tables
D1 (U7): Justify the choice of sourced information to be referenced within the article.
Primary research:

To begin my primary research I used a closed question to draw my respondents in. By asking how old they are this enables me to see how many respondents fit into my target audience. From the graph above I can see that over 80% of respondents were age 17-19 with a few under and above my target audience. This information will allow me to cater my content more to this age bracket.

Secondly, I wanted to find out how much exercise my respondents participate in each week - 26 out of 40 people answered 2-3 hours and 3+ hours. Finding out this information can give me a wider understanding on the simple ways people keep fit. This can then be used to inform and intrigue the respondents who don't do any exercise or do very little into doing more.

I used the third question as a follow up to the second question because in my article when I write about how teenagers exercise I can use the answers from my questionnaire. For example 35% of my respondents participate in team sports such as football or netball. Partaking in exercise in teams can motivate you to do more and become more involved in the sport. This means I can adapt my content more to what my respondents do.

Here I asked about the intensity of their chosen exercise. Majority answered with medium intensity, this could be anything from walking or jogging on a treadmill to leisurely swimming. From this is can gather the benefits of conditioning your body without overly exercising and straining the muscles.

In my first open question, I asked respondents if they would be interested in my podcast and article, and if not, why. Over 50% said they would be interested in a podcast and an article about simple ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However 10% of people said no, and 12.50% said no but provided reasons. Below are some of the reasons.

The responses they provided should be considered constructive criticism because I can factor them into the making of my podcast and article. For example, I can find a way for them to listen to the podcast during their commute so its not taking valuable time out of the day to listen to it. On the other hand, I can also provide content that they cannot find on YouTube because this will make it stand out against competitors.

As shown in this question 21 people said that diet is the most important component of a healthy lifestyle whilst 25% said exercise and 37.50% said mental health. From this information I can decide which topics to discuss in my article and podcast. Similarly, I can also gather further information based on this from my interviewees and use it as primary research for my article.

For the final question I left it open to interpretation where regardless of how the respondents answered they could elaborate their answer with a comment, 40 people answered with 70% answering no and only 30% answering yes, whilst only 16 of these people provided a comment. From this I can create a discussion in my podcast about the stereotypes and standards of health and fitness in society today. Below are some of the answers people provided.

My primary research was reliable and effective. This is because I asked a combination of open and closed questions that will help me to write my article because I have gained a clearer understanding of what my audience; 17-25 year olds want to hear and read about. Moreover, my primary research is reliable because I widened the questionnaire audience to 30+ in order to gain opinions about the topics from people outside of my target audience. This gave me a variety of different answers which means my research is valid and not corrupt.
My primary research is also valid because I sent the survey around to people that fit all the age categories and because I asked different ages it means i can get a wider response of varied opinions around the emphasis that is placed on health in society today. This means I can write my article contrasting the different opinion, rather than leaning to one side. Therefore, gaining a wider audience.
My research was accessible as I posted a link around so that people could easily click on it without having to create a link or provide any personal details.
My research was also good quality because I asked constructive and relevant questions to the subject of my article in order to gain a deeper understanding on their beliefs and opinions.
Finally, my primary research was cost effective because I used SurveyMonkey which is a free survey creation website and so I didn't spend any money in order to gain this research.
Secondary research:

For the first piece of secondary research I have an article from https://www.verywellhealth.com/how-much-exercise-does-your-teen-really-need-2611242. As shown above the article states the doctor recommended amount of exercise teenagers should have per week. This is exactly my target audience whereas people older would not fit this recommendation. However it is important for my older target audience such as parents, to be educated on this information so that their kids remain healthy and fit according to their age category. At the end of this section of the article is recommends simple ways to keep fit without requiring the gym or expensive equipment such as, running around a track or doing chin ups in the local park. This information will raise awareness about exercising - making it a normal part of a teenagers routine.
From this video it shows simple and easy ways for students to keep fit whilst at home. These workouts require little to no equipment and encourages them to try the exercises. Using this video as part of my secondary research enables me to find out information that I can talk about in my article. I can reference different exercises from this video and discuss the benefits of each move. It also shows how people are creating content like this because teenagers want to see it. Moreover, this could also suggest that the creators didn't have a good exercise routine and lifestyle when they were teenagers.

These statistics show the percentage of children who are overweight in the UK
P4 (U16): Generate planning materials for the intended production of sound elements.
Considerations:
For my article I will be considering doing an interview with two people. One will be a student doing a Cambridge Technical pathway and one will be an a - level student. This means I gain a well rounded understanding of how students manage their different work loads and how they balance this with exercise. Our information will therefore be more reliable because of this.
